Yoga- redefining the way of life
Probably most of us have heard about yoga and its benefits. There have been quite recently introduced various types of yoga for bodybuilding, strength and for meditation. There are also fraud institutions that teach wrong forms of yoga.
But due to this modern classification of yoga we tend to forget the main purpose of yoga. Yoga was created in ancient India, said to have originated from Adiyogi Shiva himself. It was a means for spiritual liberation. The asanas(postures) which is the most popular form of yoga today, is only a initial preparation of yoga. It is meant to give us strength so that we can move to the next stage i.e. Pranayama. It is the practise of control of breath especially the confinement of breath. If you have read any of the texts of yoga(like Hatha Yoga Pradapika) you would probably know that its about confinement of breath(kumbhaka) for a long time in accordance to inhalation and exhalation. It may seem impossible to hold breath for such a long time, but i believe that with proper practise it can be achieved. In fact there are dome current world records for holding breath for a long time.
The next step is that of dharana. In this stage you should try to focus on different body parts. It may seem useless but it builds up your concentration power to a very high level. You can even feel the workings of that organ if you become adept at it. The last step is that of samadhi. It is the most vital stage of yoga which leads to spiritual liberation. It is said to be the unification of your-self with God. But actually its that part that helps you to know your SELF. This self is actually what you are - leaving aside your possessions, your body, your sense organs and your mind. When you can truly immerse in yourself, you can truly find happiness-the perfect bliss which all yogis crave for.
